One of the first question that many of us, including myself, had when the We R Memory Keepers Foil Quill was announced was whether the Foil Quill works with other brands of foil. In the video below, I tested the fine tip Foil Quill with several different brands of foil, including heat transfer foils (like the Foil Quill brand foil) and adhesive / toner transfer foils (like the Minc & Deco Foil brand foils). I have another video coming soon with test results for the standard tip Foil Quill.
Generally, the results with heat transfer type foils were great. The one exception was the Gemini Foilpress Papercraft Foil, which had a more weathered look than the other heat transfer foils. So, if you’re going for this kind of look with your project, than the Gemini Papercraft is a good choice.
The results with the adhesive / toner transfer type foils was a mixed bag. My initial results with the Minc brand foil were noticeably weathered looking, with spotty foil coverage. But when I changed the settings for my machine (I tested everything with a Silhouette Cameo 3) and bumped up the force + made 2 passes, the results were much improved. The downside is that the foil broke in several places during the second pass, so just be aware that the Minc foil and probably a number of these other foils can possibly break or tear if you increase the force too much and/or make a second pass. If you can keep the Minc foil in one piece, though, the results are pretty darn good.
